Abbot, Father

Abbot, Father
   This would be the correct way of addressing the head of an abbey. The original meaning of ‘abbot’ was ‘father’, so the expression is tautological. ‘Abbot’ is sometimes used on its own in direct address. In Henry the Eighth Shakespeare has Griffith give an account of Cardinal Wolsey’s death:
   the reverend abbot,
   With all his convent, honourably receiv’d him;
   To whom he gave these words: ‘O father
   Abbot,
   An old man, broken with the storms of state,
   Is come to lay his weary bones among ye.’
